When buying a limited edition giclée print, it's important to understand what you're purchasing and how to look after it. While significantly cheaper than original paintings or drawings, giclée prints can still be a substantial investment and for good reason!
What is a Giclée Print?
Giclée prints are high-quality, museum-standard fine art prints. They're created using a process that sprays microscopic dots of pigment-based ink onto textured paper or canvas. This method results in a print that accurately replicates the original artwork's colours and details.
Why Invest in a Giclée Print?
Giclée prints are built to last, offering exceptional quality and longevity. They can retain their vibrant colours and value for approximately 200 years, making them a good investment. Unlike regular digital prints, giclée prints are museum-quality, ensuring their durability and aesthetic appeal.
While giclée prints may be more expensive than standard digital prints, their superior quality and potential for appreciation often justify the cost. Once signed, numbered or labelled by the artist, giclée prints can increase in value as the artist's reputation grows. Additionally, their longevity makes them a more affordable alternative to original artwork.
The term "limited edition" signifies that only a specific number of prints are produced in each size. If an artist decides to release 50 editions of a print once those 50 prints are sold, they become unavailable. This scarcity factor contributes to the increased value of limited edition giclée prints. Read on for more information about how to care for your Giclée Print.
Caring for Your Giclée Print
Handle with Care: To protect your giclée print, avoid touching it with bare hands. The oils on your skin can damage the delicate surface. Additionally, the print's ink can smudge if handled without gloves.
Frame Immediately: To ensure your print remains in pristine condition, it's best to take it directly to a professional framer, preferably still rolled in its protective packaging. Framers are experts in handling delicate artwork and will carefully mount and frame your print. While it's exciting to receive your new print, avoid unfolding it immediately as this could lead to bending or damage. Alternatively frame it yourself in an off the shelf frame (read my detailed guide to framing here)
Avoid Moisture: Keep your framed print away from humid environments like bathrooms to prevent warping or mould.
Protect from UV Light: While giclée prints are UV-resistant, prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can still cause fading so think carefully about where you hang the print. Art glass can also help protect from UV damage so is well worth considering.
