Art as the Foundation: Starting Your Interior Design Journey

Ever wondered how to infuse your space with personality and soul? The answer might be simpler than you think: art. Often overlooked as mere decoration, art can serve as the cornerstone of your interior design journey.

Interior design can take inspiration from so many places. Renowned designer, Robert Kime often based his designs around a rug for example, whereas others might use the period features of a property as their jumping off point or perhaps existing furniture might be the inspiration. I have recently had a number of surprising conversations with interior designers who have admitted that art often comes at the end of the project and can be a bit of an after thought.

I strongly believe that art is more than just a pretty picture on the wall; it's a powerful tool to set the tone, theme and overall ambience of your space. The perfect way to make it truly yours. Personally, I often like to start with art and use it as the linchpin of the whole room design. As a living breathing gallery space my home can be completely transformed depending on the art I am showcasing at any one time.

Let's explore how to use art to create a truly unique and inspiring living environment.

Why Start with Art?

  1. Sets the Tone: Art can instantly convey your personal style and interests. Whether you're drawn to abstract expressionism, minimalist landscapes or vibrant pop art, your choice of art will dictate the overall mood and atmosphere of the room. A super bright and vivid work from Abi Wason will inject some joyful bright colour into a space whereas a dreamy and soft painting from Polly Luce will create a tranquil environment.

  2. Creates a Focal Point: A striking piece of art can become the focal point of a room, drawing the eye and sparking conversation. This can help to balance the visual elements of your space and prevent it from feeling cluttered or overwhelming.

  3. Inspires Colour Palette: The colours and textures in your chosen artwork can provide a fantastic starting point for your colour palette. Whether you want to coordinate with the piece or create a contrasting effect, art can be a valuable guide.

  1. Reflects Your Personality: Art is a personal expression, and choosing pieces that resonate with you can help to create a space that feels truly authentic and inviting.

Tips for Incorporating Art into Your Interior Design

  • Consider Scale: Ensure that the size of your artwork is appropriate for the space. A large piece in a small room can feel overwhelming, while a tiny piece in a spacious room may be lost.

  • Think About Placement: Experiment with different locations to find the perfect spot for your art. Consider factors such as natural light, line of sight, and the overall flow of the room.

  • Mix and Match: Don't be afraid to mix different styles and mediums. A contemporary piece can complement a traditional space and vice versa. I really like creating juxtaposition within an interior scheme and introducing some slightly unexpected elements!

  • Curate a Collection: Over time, consider building a collection of artwork that reflects your evolving tastes and interests. This can add depth and personality to your home.

Remember: Art is a personal expression, so don't be afraid to take risks and experiment. There are no right or wrong answers. The most important thing is to choose pieces that bring you joy and make your space feel truly yours, so, go ahead, explore and let your creativity soar!
