Writer: Emily HadleyEmily Hadley

Right, so you've got some lovely art, whether it's a priceless painting or a quirky print. You want to keep it looking its best, right? No one wants a faded masterpiece or a dusty sculpture. So, here's the lowdown on how to care for your art collection without getting too fussy.

Bits and Bobs to Remember:

First things first, every piece of art is a bit different. A watercolour needs different treatment than an oil painting, and a sculpture's needs are different again. Do a bit of digging to understand what your specific pieces need. But there are some general rules of thumb that apply to most things.

General Tips (The Easy Stuff):

  • Hands Off!  Treat your art like you would your favourite jumper – with care! Always have clean, dry hands when you're handling anything. Avoid touching the actual artwork if you can help it.

  • Storage Savvy:  Think about where you keep your art. You wouldn't leave your best shoes out in the rain, would you? Keep your art in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Think of it like a comfy, stable home for your art.

  • Framing Fabulousness:  Getting your art professionally framed is a great shout. It protects the piece and makes it look its best. Plus, a good framer knows their stuff and can offer advice.

  • Dusting Duties:  A little bit of dusting goes a long way. Use a soft, clean cloth – like the one you use for your telly screen – to gently remove any dust.

  • Pest Patrol:  Nobody wants creepy crawlies near their art. Keep an eye out for any signs of pests and take action if needed. There are special pest control products for art, so have a look online or ask an expert.

Specific Art Needs (A Quick Look):

  • Paintings:  Hang them securely on good quality hooks or nails. Avoid direct sunlight and heat sources like radiators.

  • Prints:  Store them flat in acid-free folders or sleeves. Be careful not to crease or bend them.

  • Sculptures:  Keep them in a dust-free spot and handle them with extra care. They can be surprisingly fragile!
