How to Choose the Right Art for Your Home

Writer: Emily HadleyEmily Hadley

Choosing art for your home can feel daunting. It's a big decision, impacting the entire atmosphere of your space. But it doesn't have to be! This guide will break down the process, helping you find pieces you truly love and that perfectly complement your home.

1. Define Your Style:

Before you even start browsing, consider your existing décor. Is your home modern and minimalist? Do you lean towards a more traditional or bohemian vibe? Identifying your style will help narrow your search and ensure your new art integrates seamlessly. Think about the colours, textures, and overall feeling of your home. Do you want the art to blend in or be a statement piece?

2. Consider the Space:

The size of your walls and the room itself are crucial factors. A large, abstract canvas might overwhelm a small room, while a tiny print could get lost on a vast wall. Measure the space you have available and consider the scale of the art in relation to the furniture and other décor. Also, think about the lighting in the room. A piece might look completely different under bright sunlight versus soft lamplight.

3. Explore Different Mediums:

Art comes in a multitude of forms. Are you drawn to the vibrant colours of oil paintings? Do you prefer the delicate details of watercolours or the graphic impact of prints? Perhaps photography or sculpture is more your style. Exploring different mediums will expose you to a wider range of artistic expression and help you discover what resonates with you.

4. Trust Your Gut:

Ultimately, the most important thing is to choose art that you love. Don't worry too much about trends or what you think you should like. Art is subjective, and your personal connection to a piece is what matters most. If a piece speaks to you, evokes an emotion or simply makes you happy, that's a good sign.

5. Start Small (If You're Feeling Overwhelmed):

You don't have to fill your entire home with art overnight. Start with one piece that you truly love and build from there. A single, well-chosen piece can have a significant impact on a room. You can also start with more affordable options, like prints or photographs and gradually invest in original artwork as your budget allows.

6. Visit Art Galleries (Like mine!):

Visiting art galleries is a fantastic way to experience art in person. You can see the texture, the scale and the true colours of a piece much better than online. Gallery staff are also knowledgeable and can answer your questions, provide insights into the artists, and help you find pieces that fit your style and budget. Please get in touch to arrange an in-person visit to my Devon gallery!

7. Don't Be Afraid to Ask for Advice:

If you're unsure about a piece, don't hesitate to ask for advice from friends, family or art consultants. Getting a second opinion can be helpful, but remember that ultimately, the decision is yours.

8. Think About Framing:

The frame can be just as important as the artwork itself. It can either complement the piece or detract from it. Consider the style of your art and your home décor when choosing a frame. A professional framer can offer valuable guidance and help you select the perfect frame for your artwork.

It is also fairly simple to source your own from online framers such as EasyFrame, Jackson's Art or high street shops such as Dunelm or Habitat. Alternatively source vintage frames from charity shops or markets for a truly unique finishing touch!

9. Enjoy the Process!

So now you know how to choose the right art for your home! Choosing art for your home should be an enjoyable experience. Take your time, explore different options, and trust your instincts. The art you choose will become a part of your home's story, reflecting your personal style and creating a space you love.
