Finding the Perfect Spot: Where to Hang Art in Your Home

As an art enthusiast, you know that the joy of collecting isn't just in the acquisition - it's in the placement. Art has the power to transform a space, set a mood, and reflect your personality. And I wholeheartedly agree: there are no hard and fast rules, and that is the absolute joy of it! Every room in your home deserves a piece of that magic.

Here's a room-by-room guide on how to think about placing art to maximize its impact and your enjoyment.

The Unconventional Spaces: Kitchen and Bathroom

Forget the idea that art is just for formal rooms! I'm an advocate for art in every room, and that includes the kitchen and bathroom.

  • Kitchen & Dining Room: Keep it Fun and Social. These are the spaces where people gather, converse, and laugh. They thrive on energy. Go for something fun, vibrant, and conversational. Think bright colours, whimsical subjects, or pieces that celebrate food and drink. A playful print or a colourful abstract can keep the atmosphere light and engaging.

  • Bathroom: Unexpected Delight. The bathroom is often a small space where a single piece can make a big impact. Choose art that is intriguing or a little quirky - it can be a delightful surprise for guests. Just be mindful of humidity; prints behind glass or durable materials are best here.

The Private Spaces: Bedroom and Home Office

The art in your private sanctuaries should be tailored to promote relaxation and focus.

  • Bedroom: Quieter, Contemplative Pieces. The bedroom is your retreat, a place for winding down. The art here should support that goal. Opt for quieter, more contemplative pieces. Soft, muted colour palettes, landscapes, abstract works with gentle lines or simple figurative pieces can all create a sense of calm and serenity. Avoid anything too jarring, intense or anxiety-inducing.

  • Home Office: Motivation and Inspiration. If you have a dedicated workspace, the art should be stimulating and inspiring. A piece that makes you feel motivated, reflects your aspirations or simply brings you joy every time you look up is perfect.

The Statement Makers: Living Room and Hallway

These are the rooms that most guests see, making them ideal spots to express your main artistic vision.

  • Living Room: The Large Statement Piece. This is often the anchor of your home, and it deserves a piece that demands attention. A large, statement piece - perhaps a bold abstract painting, a significant photograph, or a sculptural work - works beautifully above a sofa, fireplace or on the largest uninterrupted wall. It sets the tone for the entire room and serves as a natural conversation starter.

  • Hallway & Stairwell: The Gallery Wall. A hallway is often a long, blank canvas, making it the perfect place for a dynamic arrangement. A gallery wall is ideal here. It lets you showcase an eclectic collection of different sizes, frames, and mediums. It's a way to tell a visual story as you move through your home, transforming a transitional space into a destination in itself.

A Final Thought on Breaking the Rules

The beauty of decorating with art lies in its personal nature. Do you love a moody, dramatic piece in your kitchen? Go for it! Does a brightly coloured pop-art print help you wake up in the morning? Hang it over your bed!

Use these suggestions as a springboard, but ultimately, let your own connection to a piece guide its placement. If it makes you pause, smile or think, you've found the right spot.
