Art Rules (to break!)

The art world can be a bit stuck in it's ways and let's face it a bit intimidating at times. Don't let that put you off, rules are meant to be broken, especially when it comes to art! Break the art rules and let it help you create a unique and meaningful living space.
Here's my rebellious take on some well established art rules and ideas...

Art Propaganda I am NOT falling for!
Art Rule - Art must match the sofa. Art doesn’t HAVE to match your colour scheme or style. Great art can complement, contrast or stand apart from the rest of your decor. If you love it and it speaks to you, buy it!
Art Rule - You SHOULDN’T buy art just to match your sofa. If you want to buy art just because it matches your sofa, do it! That’s definitely a good enough reason in my eyes. It doesn’t have to be that deep!
Art Rule - Only large art works in a large room. A large piece can be a statement in a small room, and small works can be beautifully impactful in large spaces, especially when grouped intentionally.
Art Rule - Art belongs only at eye level. While eye-level (specifically approx 57 inches from the floor!) is a safe rule of thumb, breaking it, like salon-style walls or floor-to-ceiling hangings can add drama and personality.
Art Rule - All art must be framed. Raw canvases, tapestries, fabric hangings, or unframed paper works can offer a more relaxed or bohemian aesthetic.
Art Rule - Art is just for walls. Sculptures, mobiles, art books, ceramics and even painted floors or ceilings are all forms of interior art. Prop that painting on a window sill, shelf or chair!
Art Rule - You need a big budget for great art. Emerging artists, prints, and even DIY or vintage finds can be just as impactful as high-end gallery pieces.
Art Rule - You can’t mix art styles. Eclectic collections, mixing abstract, photography, traditional and vintage pieces can reflect your personality and tell a richer visual story.
Art Rule - Art should always be the focal point. Art can be a subtle layer in the room’s narrative—it doesn’t have to dominate the space. Put that special piece in the corner and let it bring you joy every time you see it!
Art Rule - Art placement is permanent. Art can (and should) evolve with your space, moving things around seasonally or as your collection grows keeps things fresh. My collection is always changing and I love it!
